The healthcare supply chain is faced with some unique challenges, especially for
bio-pharmaceutical manufacturers. Given that many drugs are critical to patient health, much of
the lean inventory practices employed in other industries (particularly popular for

Visibility is key to confidence in the relationships between OEMs and their CMs
It's no surprise to anyone in this industry that challenges exist in the relationships between OEMs and CMs. The outsourcing of your manufacturing operations, when you live in a world of constant change, can be unnerving when you lack the real-time visibility you need to be confident about the commitments you made to your customers.
While OEMs are taxed with aggressive competition and incredible demand swings from an increasingly fickle market place, they also remain ultimately accountable to the customer and customer commitments. When OEMs outsource their production they lack the visibility and control over their manufacturing operations, yet they still face inventory liability issues resulting from excess and obsolete parts due to engineering changes.
Competition in the marketplace results in price wars and that trickles down to the CMs who are being asked to do more, for less while managing unexpected supplier disruptions; demand fluctuations; inventory liability issues; capacity constraints while also delivering high customer service levels and maintaining their operating margin objectives.
The bad news? This new reality is here to stay.
