Launching a new job search can often feel like navigating uncharted waters, especially in today’s dynamic job market. Whether you’re taking the first step in your career or eyeing a significant leap forward, embarking on a new job search can be both exhilarating and overwhelming.

At Kinaxis, we’re always seeking out great talent to join our global team. To give you an insider’s perspective, we asked Mithun Kumar, our Manager, Talent Acquisition, for his top 10 tips for global jobseekers beginning their hunt for their next role.

Project management: job search edition

  1. Set clear objectives: It can be overwhelming wading through open job listings. Bring organization to your search by defining what you want in your next job. This could be the type of role, the industry, company culture, salary, etc. Having clear goals can guide your job search.
  2. Develop a job search plan: Break down your job search into actionable tasks. This could include updating your resume, networking, applying for jobs, and preparing for interviews.
  3. Organize your applications: Use a spreadsheet or a project management tool to track the jobs you’ve applied for, follow-ups, and interview dates. This can help you stay organized and prevent any missed opportunities.
  4. Schedule time for job search activities: Treat your job search like a job. Dedicate specific hours each day for job search activities.
  5. Network: Connect with industry professionals, attend career fairs and industry events. Networking can often lead to job opportunities.
  6. Review and adjust: Regularly review your job search strategy and make necessary adjustments based on your progress and feedback.
  7. Customize your resume and cover letter: Tailor your resume and cover letter to each job you apply for. Highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the job description.
  8. Leverage LinkedIn: LinkedIn can be a powerful tool in your job search. Make sure your profile is up-to-date and showcases your skills, experiences, and professional interests. You can also use LinkedIn to research companies and find job postings.
  9. Prepare for interviews: Research common interview questions and practice your responses. Also, research the company and the role so you can ask insightful questions during the interview.
  10. Follow up: After an interview, send a thank-you note to express your appreciation for the opportunity. This can help you stand out from other candidates.

BONUS tip: Stay positive! Job searching can be stressful and time-consuming. It’s important to take care of your mental health during this process. Always try to keep an optimistic perspective, and don’t get discouraged if you don’t get a job offer right away.

Remember, every job search is a journey. It might take some time, but with persistence and the right strategy, you’ll find the right opportunity. Good luck!
